Connecticut Fishing Guides

Connecticut's fishing runs on contrasts — technical cold-water trout fishing on the Farmington River Trophy Management Area within an hour of Hartford, Long Island Sound's striped bass and bluefish blitzes at the state's southern edge, and smallmouth on the Housatonic that would get more attention if they weren't in such a densely populated state.

Where to fish

Top waters in Connecticut

Farmington River (Trophy Management Area)

Brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout

One of the best tailwaters in the Northeast. Catch-and-release TMA section with wild holdover browns and rainbows up to 25 inches. Prolific hatches — Hendricksons, caddis, sulphurs, tricos.

Housatonic River

Smallmouth bass, brown trout

Trout Management Area in the upper river. Smallmouth fishery downstream. Classic freestone with strong wild brown trout in the TMA. Thermal-refuge zones closed June 15 to September 15 to protect stressed fish during the warm-water window.

Long Island Sound (CT coast)

Striped bass, bluefish, false albacore

Inshore saltwater fishery from Greenwich to Stonington. Striper migration peaks in spring and fall. False albacore run in September — one of the most electric fly fisheries in the Northeast.

Salmon River

Brown trout, Atlantic salmon

Eastern CT freestone that gets broodstock Atlantic salmon releases each fall. Unique opportunity to catch Atlantic salmon on a small river. Trophy trout in the Trophy Management Area.

When to go

Connecticut fishing by season

April–May

Spring

Hendrickson hatch on the Farmington and Housatonic. Striped bass begin their run along the coast. Trout streams come alive as water warms through the 50s. Best dry-fly fishing of the year.

June–August

Summer

Sulphurs, caddis, and tricos on the Farmington. Housatonic TMA closes June 15. Striper fishing shifts to night and early morning. Smallmouth in the lower Housatonic and Connecticut rivers.

September–November

Fall

False albacore run in late September is the saltwater highlight of the year. Striper blitzes along the coast. Brown trout pre-spawn on the Farmington. The best all-around fishing month is October.

December–March

Winter

Farmington TMA fishes year-round with midge and BWO activity. Ice fishing on the larger inland lakes. Most coastal fishing winds down by Thanksgiving. Nymphing on the Farmington is the winter standard.

Why Connecticut

The Farmington's TMA is one of very few eastern tailwaters with genuine wild-brown-trout holdover and productive hatches three seasons a year. You can fish it Thursday night after work and be home by 10pm. Coastal saltwater access is extraordinary for a small state. And the Housatonic has legitimately big smallmouth in water most Northeast anglers overlook.

Insider tip

The false albacore run off Watch Hill in late September is a narrow window — usually 10-14 days when bait and fish align. Book a guide in August for a late-September charter and be ready to go on short notice when reports start coming in. Missing the window means waiting a year.
