Maryland Fishing Guides

Maryland packs an unusual range of fishing into a small state — the Chesapeake Bay striped bass fishery, trophy brown trout on the Gunpowder tailwater, smallmouth on the upper Potomac, and cold mountain streams in the far west. The Chesapeake is the single largest striper nursery on the East Coast, and the Gunpowder is the rare tailwater east of the Mississippi producing wild (not stocked) brown trout in meaningful numbers.

Where to fish

Top waters in Maryland

Chesapeake Bay

Striped bass, bluefish, speckled trout, red drum

One of the great US inshore fisheries. Spring trophy striper season (April-May) on big fish staging for the spawn. Fall blitzes on breaking fish in November. Fly or light tackle.

Gunpowder River

Brown trout

Tailwater below Prettyboy Reservoir. Wild brown trout in the lower sections — no stocking. Fishes year-round; sulphur hatch in June is the annual event. Within 30 minutes of Baltimore.

Upper Potomac River

Smallmouth bass, muskellunge

Prime smallmouth water from Hancock downstream. Float stretches or walk-wade the flats. July-August topwater fishing at dawn is a tradition. Occasional trophy muskie in the deep holes.

Youghiogheny River (western MD)

Brown trout, rainbow trout

Tailwater trout fishery below Deep Creek Lake. Stocked but grows fish to size. Walk-wade friendly. Best in spring and fall when water temps are optimal.

When to go

Maryland fishing by season

April–May

Spring

Trophy striper season on the Chesapeake — 40+ inch fish in shallow water. Gunpowder fishes well with BWOs and sulphur starts. Upper Potomac smallmouth pre-spawn.

June–August

Summer

Striper fishery shifts to smaller resident fish. Smallmouth on the Potomac is firing. Gunpowder sulphurs peak in June. Early-morning and dusk fishing to beat heat and boat traffic.

September–November

Fall

Striper blitz season on the Chesapeake — surface-feeding fish chasing bait. Best striped bass fishing of the year. Trout fishing improves on Gunpowder as water cools.

December–February

Winter

Chesapeake resident striper fishery continues into early winter. Gunpowder brown trout fish all year with midge hatches. Western MD freestones slow down with snow.

Why Maryland

The Chesapeake Bay is the most productive estuary on the Atlantic coast and the striped bass nursery for the entire East Coast. Fishing here is fishing at the source. The Gunpowder is a genuine wild brown trout fishery in the DC-Baltimore corridor, which shouldn't exist but does because of the cold-water release from Prettyboy. Very few east-coast states offer this range of fishing within a two-hour drive of a major metro.

Insider tip

Book a Chesapeake trip for the first two weeks of May when the big migratory stripers are staged in the upper bay. These are the 40-50 inch fish that migrate up the coast to New England each summer — your only window to catch them in shallow water is here, before they leave.
