Utah Fishing Guides
Utah has one of the best tailwater trout fisheries in the country on the Green River below Flaming Gorge, plus the Provo, the Weber, the Logan, and a Uinta Mountains high-country fishery most anglers never visit. It's a state where you can fish a 22-inch wild brown in the morning and catch native Colorado cutthroat in a 10,000-foot lake in the afternoon.
Top waters in Utah
Green River (below Flaming Gorge)
Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout
The famous 'A Section' is seven miles of gin-clear tailwater with thousands of fish per mile — visible from the drift boat. One of the most photographed trout fisheries in the country. June cicada hatch is an event.
Provo River (Middle)
Brown trout, rainbow trout
Tailwater below Deer Creek Reservoir. Wade-heavy water with PMD, BWO, and Green Drake hatches. A 30-minute drive from Salt Lake City. Crowded but legitimately fishy.
Weber River
Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout
Less famous than the Provo, which is the point. Technical pocket water through Weber Canyon. The salmonfly hatch in late May and early June draws a small but devoted following.
Uinta Mountains lakes
Brook trout, cutthroat trout, tiger trout, arctic grayling
Hundreds of high-elevation lakes, most hike-in. Arctic grayling in some — a species transplanted successfully from the high Rockies. Best from mid-July through September only.
Utah fishing by season
Spring
Green River and Provo fish well all spring. BWO hatches on overcast days. Utah freestones are still dealing with runoff. Salt Lake and Provo valleys warm fast — fishing conditions often better than the calendar suggests.
Summer
Cicada hatch on the Green (a 2-3 week window in June). Uintas open up after snowmelt — arguably the best month is late July. Afternoon thunderstorms above 9,000 feet are daily; plan accordingly.
Fall
Brown trout pre-spawn on the Provo, Weber, and Green. Aspen colors in the Wasatch and Uintas are spectacular. Fewer anglers after Labor Day. Streamer season peaks.
Winter
Green River and Provo fish year-round. Midge hatches on warm afternoons. Ski-and-fish combo trips from Park City work well — one day on the water, one day on the slopes.
The Green River's A Section holds an extraordinary trout density — Utah DWR electrofishing surveys put the upper section in the 8,000-15,000 fish-per-mile range, which would be impossible anywhere without the Flaming Gorge cold-water release. Combine that with the Provo's in-town convenience and the Uintas' genuine wilderness, and Utah packs an unusual range of fishing into a compact footprint. Cost of guide services runs 15-25% below Montana and Wyoming for comparable quality.
The cicada hatch on the Green is a calendar event — when it hits, every fish in the river eats 2-inch foam bugs off the surface for three weeks, then it's over. Watch fly shop reports from late May; when the bugs start, drop everything and go.
