How much should you tip a fishing guide?

Short answer: 15–20% of the trip cost is standard. But there's nuance. Here's how to think about it so you don't stress in the parking lot after a great day on the water.

The baseline

Tip 15–20% of the trip's base cost. A $500 half-day? $75–100. A $1,000 full-day? $150–200. A $3,000 multi-day float for two anglers? $450–600, split across the crew if there's more than one guide.

How guides actually get paid

Most guides work as independent contractors for an outfitter. The outfitter keeps a significant cut for overhead — boats, shuttles, insurance, booking, gear, office time, licensing. The guide's cut on a Western full-day trip ($700–800 gross) is typically somewhere in the $200–300 range before tips. Factor in gas, a long drive home, and a short season, and your tip is meaningful to them in a way a restaurant tip isn't.

When to tip more

• They worked for it. Slow day, tough conditions, but they kept moving and put you on fish when it mattered.
• They taught you. First-timers get extra attention; if the guide turned a half-day into a casting lesson too, 25%+ is fair.
• Exceptional day. You caught the fish of a lifetime. Whatever you'd have happily paid for that fish, pay it.
• Shuttle, transport, lunch, flies were all included and they went above-standard on any of them.

When 15% is fine

• Good day, good service, no unusual effort required.
• You brought a party of 4+ — bigger tips at 15% still add up.
• You had a great guide on a bad day that genuinely couldn't be saved.

Bring cash

Most guides don't carry card readers in the boat, and "I'll Venmo you" rarely happens. Stop at an ATM on the way in. Fold it into their hand, thank them by name, shake hands. That's the move.

Should you tip the outfitter staff?

No — tip the guide(s) who ran your trip, not the office that booked it. Multi-day floats with a cook or camp staff are the exception: tip the full crew, typically 10–20% of the trip cost split across guides, oarsmen, and camp staff by the head guide.
