Idaho Fishing Guides
Idaho sits at the headwaters. The Henry's Fork, Silver Creek, South Fork of the Snake, Selway, St. Joe, and the main Salmon — every one of them a destination fishery. Add steelhead in the Clearwater and Salmon drainages and cutthroat in genuinely wild country, and Idaho offers more blue-ribbon trout water per capita than any state except Montana. Hemingway spent the last years of his life on Silver Creek for a reason.

Henry's Fork of the Snake
Rainbow trout, brown trout
Large Railroad Ranch section (now Harriman State Park) holds some of the most technical rainbow fishing in the country. Legendary green drake hatch in mid-to-late June. Spring creek-like flows over volcanic substrate.
Silver Creek
Brown trout, rainbow trout
Hemingway's spring creek near Sun Valley. Catch-and-release, fly-only on most sections. Technical dry-fly fishing to selective trout. The brown drake hatch — late May into early June — is a bucket-list event.
South Fork of the Snake River
Cutthroat trout, brown trout, rainbow trout
The single best cutthroat fishery in the Lower 48. Large drift-boat water with native Yellowstone cutthroat predominating. Salmonfly hatch in late June; mutant golden stones and PMDs through summer.
Clearwater River / Salmon River
Steelhead, chinook salmon
Idaho's inland steelhead fishery. B-run steelhead (returning to the Salmon and Clearwater) are larger than the A-run — 15-pound fish are common. October through March.
Idaho fishing by season
Spring
Steelhead on the Clearwater through April. Silver Creek and parts of Henry's Fork are still closed or just opening. Spring freestones blowing out with snowmelt. Mostly a tailwater and steelhead season.
Summer
Peak season. Green drakes on Henry's Fork in late June. Brown drakes on Silver Creek. Salmonfly on the South Fork. Terrestrial fishing in August. Best dry-fly fishing in the West.
Fall
South Fork cutthroat pre-spawn. Brown trout feeding hard on Silver Creek and Henry's Fork. Steelhead arrive in the Salmon and Clearwater. Stunning aspens in the Sawtooths.
Winter
Steelhead fishery continues on the Clearwater. Most of the state locks up. South Fork tailwater section stays open — quiet, technical midge fishing with a shot at big browns.
Three of the most famous trout streams in America are in Idaho: Henry's Fork, Silver Creek, and the South Fork of the Snake. Add steelhead fisheries that travel 700 miles inland from the Pacific to get here — some of the most improbable migrations on the planet — and you have a state where every major fishery is distinct and destination-level. The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness alone covers 2.4 million acres — most of Idaho's best water flows through country without roads.
The Henry's Fork gets crowded in late June for the green drake. The secret season is late September — mahogany duns, baetis, streamers for pre-spawn browns, and a third of the anglers. The South Fork of the Snake in early October is the single best cutthroat window of the year.
